This series started from a question that psychometrics has not asked with sufficient rigor: what is intelligence? It showed that existing tools measure a behavioral output of a complex system while ignoring the causal levels that determine it and the general dynamic configuration. It proposed an alternative three-layer model, with the integration of a fourth. It is time to draw the conclusions.

Intelligence can be measured. This statement is not in question. What is in question is how. Psychometrics responded by building tools before having a theory. The result is a scalar number that compresses a multidimensional structure, produced under artificial conditions and that does not access the underlying levels. Therefore, psychometrics as conceived to date is insufficient.

Neuroscience provides the theory that psychometrics lacks. Intelligence is an emergent property of a complex, dynamic, and open connective structure. It depends on axonal conduction velocity, the topological efficiency of the connectome, the flexibility with which the network reconfigures in response to task demands, its ability to remain coherent under perturbation, and the quality of the predictive process with which the system models its environment. These levels are all measurable, with different tools, on different time scales.

IQ survives as a circumscribed diagnostic tool. It is useful for identifying learning difficulties, evaluating the effectiveness of educational interventions, and comparing performance in homogeneous populations. It ceases to be a measure of intelligence in the general sense and the criterion by which we describe an individual's cognitive functioning.

Il QI sopravvive come strumento diagnostico circoscritto. È utile per identificare difficoltà di apprendimento, valutare l'efficacia di interventi educativi, confrontare prestazioni in popolazioni omogenee. Cessa di essere una misura dell'intelligenza in senso generale e il criterio con cui descriviamo il funzionamento cognitivo di un individuo.

Consequently, the very concept of cognitive profile changes. It is no longer a point on a scale, but a multidimensional description of what the network is made of, how it behaves in the real world, how well it holds up under pressure, and how accurately it models the environment. This description is much more useful, much more precise, and much more respectful of the complexity of what we are trying to measure.

Conseguentemente, cambia il concetto stesso di profilo cognitivo che non è più un punto su una scala, ma una descrizione multidimensionale di com'è fatta la rete, come si comporta nel mondo reale, quanto regge sotto pressione e quanto accuratamente modella l'ambiente. The road is not short. The three/four-layer model requires tools and skills that are not yet integrated into a standard protocol. But the direction is clear, the tools exist, and the theoretical framework is solid.
