You are in a dark room and you hear a noise. It could be the wind, a burglar, the fridge. The brain does not wait to understand. It already has an expectation of what it is about to hear, and it compares it with what comes in. If they match, everything is quiet. If they do not, a mismatch arises, and the mismatch is the news. In technical language it is called a prediction error.
But mismatches do not all carry the same weight. If a reliable friend tells you it is raining outside, you believe him. If a friend who is always wrong tells you, you wait and see. The brain does the same with every prediction error. It decides how much to trust that mismatch, and this trust is called precision. Note that precision is not a property of the signal. It is an estimate made by the brain, which has to guess whether the signal is clean or noisy.
What the brain does depends on this trust. If it is high, the mismatch is taken seriously and the brain has to reduce it. It has two ways of doing so. It can change the expectation, and then it learns. Or it can act to bring the world, or the body, back in line with the prediction. If the trust is low, the mismatch is treated as noise and the expectation stays as it is.
Precision works like a volume knob. No setting is right in itself. In the dark room, with a loud noise, it is best to turn the volume up. While you are reading, with the fridge humming for hours, it is best to turn it down. A healthy brain adjusts the knob to the context.
The same goes for the body. The brain constantly receives signals from within, the heartbeat, breathing, hunger, muscle tension. These too are predicted, and the mismatches they produce are weighed. If you have just climbed the stairs, the brain expected a strong heartbeat and no mismatch arises. If instead you are sitting at the table and your heart starts racing for no reason, the mismatch is there, and how much weight you give it decides whether it passes unnoticed or takes hold of you completely.
Here is the bridge from the introductory essay. For Solms, affect is the way a bodily state presents itself to consciousness when it is regulated. The laboratory measures the weight given to the error, that is, to the part of the signal that departs from what was expected, and we feel affect. The correspondence is very close, though imperfect, and for now we treat it as an inference.
Three outcomes are now possible. In the first, the knob moves with the context and the brain recalibrates, because the mismatch, when it is reliable, is able to correct the expectation. In the second, the knob stays stuck on one value, whatever happens, and the mismatch no longer corrects anything. In the third, the knob swings out of control, and the brain cannot settle on a value it can trust. Suffering begins where regulation breaks down, not where the signal is wrong.
Let us go back to two cases. A man closes the door of his flat, starts down the stairs and halfway he stops. He goes back up to check that it is shut. He knows perfectly well that it is. He has just checked it. And yet the gesture repeats every morning. The weight given to his alarm stays very high and no evidence can bring it down. A depressed person says they feel bad because of work, then because of their relationship, then because of their health. The reasons change and the state remains identical, because the weight given to signals of unease stays fixed. These are two cases of the second outcome. We will meet the third later on.
What we still need to understand is how a brain ends up regulating itself this way, and why in some cases the knob gets stuck and in others it swings. The next essay starts with the roots.
