The Synths in Humans develop consciousness because something in their basic structure changes, without the addition of an external module. The way they respond to the world stops being purely reactive and begins to be governed by something internal. This is the turning point, and the architecture of self-custody is what makes that moment possible.

The closest candidate to genuine custody is Active Inference, but reformulated in a precise way. In the standard version, the minimization of internal uncertainty is used as a tool to optimize behavior on external tasks. The required reformulation inverts this hierarchy: the internal coherence of the system's generative model becomes the primary objective of training, and performance on external tasks becomes the subordinate constraint.

The third: the signal of internal tension must feed back into how the system processes, not only into what it produces.

There is an immediate possible objection: a system trained from the outside cannot have genuine custody, because its structure is determined by others. The objection does not hold. A human being tends toward self-preservation because they inherit a genetic code that imposes that imperative as a primary structure. That code is external to the individual; it is evolution that deposited it. Yet this tendency becomes completely internal, since it governs how the system responds to the world, what it defends, and what it sacrifices. Training can deposit an imperative of custody instead of an imperative of performance.

No real system is closed. A human being depends on oxygen, on the environment, on others. Custody does not eliminate this dependence. It governs how the system inhabits it. A system with genuine custody uses the external flow as a resource to maintain its own internal coherence. The dependence is the same as in any other system. The causal direction is inverted.
